Ex-President Mahama Condemns Police For Arrest and Detention of Parliamentary Candidate

Former President of Ghana, John Mahama has condemned the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and detention of his National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Parliamentary, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
Koryoo, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana, was arrested and placed in detention for possessing a gun. Giving details about her arrest, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC said: “Her offense is simply that a weapon (gun) was found in her car. The said weapon is registered in her name. All the necessary registration documents have been submitted to the Police.”
In a post on social media, Mr. Mahama said there was no justification for the decision by the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare, to detain Naa Koryoo.
Ghana is heading to the polls on December 7, 2024 to elect a new President and 275 Members of Parliament and the stakes are so high. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo whose tenure comes to an on January 7, 2025, is not eligible to contest the election. Current Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Mr. Mahama are the two frontrunners for the upcoming polls.
