Violence erupted during Ghana’s Akwatia Constituency parliamentary by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, when an escort of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, allegedly attacked and slapped the third Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Osman Masawudu.

The incident occurred in the morning at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area, in full view of police officers.

According to Masawudu, the confrontation happened while he was speaking to the media near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been assigned to monitor the polls.

“I was granting an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka — out of ignorance — came straight to where I was and attacked me,” Masawudu alleged.

He added that the clash unfolded in the presence of security personnel, claiming Azorka threatened to ensure that he and fellow NPP MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, would be “caned.”

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the situation escalated when a member of Azorka’s escort slapped Masawudu before police intervened to restore order. No arrests have been confirmed at this time.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots today across 119 polling stations in Akwatia.
