The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce a point management system aimed at reducing reckless driving and improving road safety across Ghana.
Under the new system, points will be deducted from drivers’ licences for traffic offences. Drivers who lose all their points will be required to return to driving school before being allowed back on the road.
DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey disclosed the initiative during a familiarisation visit by Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Tofey to the authority on Monday.
“We all complain about the bad state of our road network, but what about the human factor?” Kotey asked. “To address this, we will implement the point management system. If you drive recklessly, points will be deducted from your licence. Once your points are finished, you’ll go back to driving school.”
He added that the DVLA has mechanised its compliance system to improve efficiency, with 10 compliance officers now deployed in every regional office to enforce road safety regulations.
