Finidi George, the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has been sacked over Nigeria’s recent poor performance in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser in the wake of Nigeria’s abysmal performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

After an executive committee on June 12, 2024, the NFF offered an apology to Nigerians for their national team’s poor performance. The Super Eagles have managed to earn three points out of a possible 12 points.

Nigeria’s hope of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup appears to be hanging in the balance.

The Super Eagles coming from a 1 – 1 draw against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in their recent home match, lost 2 – 1 to Benin in Abidjan on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Coach Finidi George’s side had taken the lead in the 27th minute through a Onyedika’s goal. But Benin came right back in the match with an equalizer from J. Dossou in the 37th minute.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Benin who used the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium as their home turf, doubled their score, kind courtesy S. Mounie’s 45+3 minute goal.

The results from Abidjan leaves Nigeria sitting fifth on the table with three points. Benin are top of their group with seven points.

The Super Eagles are yet to win any match in the World Cup qualifiers. They have drew three of the four games they have played in Group C and lost one.
