116 People Killed In India’s Deadly Religious Stampede

Some 116 persons have reportedly lost their lives in a religious stampede in India. Those dead are mostly women and children.

Local media reports say the deaths occurred as thousands of people at a religious gathering in India rushed to leave a makeshift tent, causing the stampede on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Over 80 worshippers were injured in the stampede, reports say.

Reports say the worshippers were attending an event with Hindu figure Bhole Baba in a village in Hathras District which is about 350 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of the state capital, Lucknow.

Reports claimed around 15,000 people attended the event, which had permission to host just 5,000.

Local news reports cited authorities who claimed heat and suffocation in the tent could have been a factor.

Video of the aftermath showed the structure appeared to have collapsed.
