The first Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa is now holding a supermajority in the country’s National Assembly.

This has been possible by the coming together of five parties that have signed a statement of intent to form the Government of National Unity.

The parties are the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), and GOOD.

ANC on June Monday, June 17, 2024, published a statement providing updates to South Africans on the parties represented in the National Assembly which intend to form part of the Government of National Unity.

The five parties now make up 273 (68%) out of the 400 seats in the National Assembly, meaning they now have the supermajority.

Inauguration

Meanwhile, the re-elected President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, will be inaugurated next week Wednesday, June 19.

The Secretary to Parliament, Xolile George, recently announced that the inauguration will take place in Pretoria. The announcement was made during South Africa’s National Assembly first sitting on Friday, June 14, at Cape Town International Convention Centre, where Mr. Ramaphosa was re-elected following the swearing in of Members of Parliament.

The first sittings of the National Assembly on Friday and the National Council of Provinces on Saturday marks the beginning of the new Parliamentary term, following the elections on May 29, 2024.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) earlier agreed to form a Government of National Unity, paving the way for Mr. Ramaphosa’s re-election as President.
